It is usually the first big decision a couple makes, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. Get it right and the rest of the design has somewhere to live. get it wrong and you spend the whole planning process compensating.
So we are honest about what we are looking for. We treat a venue as a blank canvas.
A space open enough to hold our ideas without fighting them. But before a place can become that canvas, it has to clear a baseline, and ours is high. Good design. Seamless service. Amenities that feel genuinely luxurious rather than just expensive. Our taste is that demanding when it comes to offering our clients the best.
That standard exists for a reason, because a destination wedding was never really about a single day. The wedding is the reason everyone comes, but it is only one part of what actually happens. More and more of the couples we work with are planning a weekend where everyone they love is in the same place at the same time, and where the days around the ceremony matter just as much as the ceremony itself.
Which is why a venue is never just a backdrop for the ceremony. It is the place a group of people will live together for two or three days. When we walk an estate, we are not only asking whether it photographs well. We are asking where guests will gather in the morning, where they will drift after dinner, whether there is room for the whole weekend to breathe.
This summer, we were scouting the Algarve for a particular couple, one whose standards run as high as ours. Which, naturally, sent us looking deeper than usual, past the postcard, for the real thing. And we found it, tucked into the countryside above the coast: Ombria.
Under the Viceroy group, Ombria is no longer a venue you have to build around, it is a hotel, and a seamless one. It is designed in the style of an intimate Algarve village, all cobblestone paths and quiet courtyards, wrapped in citrus groves and river valley rather than crowded beachfront. Thirty minutes from Faro, twenty from the coast, and still it feels like a world set apart.
Standing there, we could already picture the weekend taking shape. A round of golf on the 18-hole signature course for the early risers, straight after breakfast. Cocktails by the pool in the late afternoon, terraces catching the light. Long lunches that no one is in a hurry to end, dining that moves easily from an intimate room to a table set for everyone at once. A spa that takes its cues from the landscape. The beach there when you want it (arranged by the resort, on your terms) without the whole weekend dissolving into sand. This is exactly the kind of place where the moments between the events become the event.
Of course, it is one thing to read all of this and another to feel it. When a couple can come and experience the place themselves, wonderful. When they cannot, that is our job, and we take it seriously. A scouting trip is not only tasting the food, testing the spa and admiring the amenities. It is reporting, photographing, asking the uncomfortable questions, going deep on hidden costs, on the tricky logistics, on the calculations that never make it into a brochure.
Ombria surprised us. The kind of surprise that quietly raises your standards, and once it does, you cannot look back.
